Construction 101: Basic Construction Surveying

Course Description:  

  • This class will be for general construction survey and math.  Class will cover use of basic rotating and pipe lasers, setup and use of survey grade levels, instrument care, setting basic elevations using benchmark and laser/grade rod, simple construction math, and setup and use of total station for construction layout.

GPS 101: Site Set up

Course Description:  

  • New GPS Site Set-up and Calibration with Siteworks
  • This course is intended for anyone charged with setting up new GPS jobsites.
  • We will cover what information you need to request ahead of time and how to handle, convert, and load those job files to your Siteworks data collector. We will also go over what you need to consider and how to set up the GNSS base station, GNSS rover, and perform the local site calibration. We will go over how to interpret your results along with how to create data for your GCS900, Accugrade, Earthworks, and CAT 3D Grade control systems.

Siteworks 101

Course Description:  

  • This class will be for basic understanding of Trimble’s current software for GPS Rover Use. The Current Version of Siteworks is 1.80 . Class will follow up on GPS (RTK) fundamentals from GPS 101, full overview of the menu and settings, use of GPS rover for site calibration & data management. Students in this class will be provided with a hands on Siteworks simulator. This class will be for an Advanced understanding of Trimble’s current software for GPS Rover Use. The Current Version of Siteworks is 1.80 Class will follow up on GPS101 & Siteworks101, we will cover, stakeout, TOPO, feature collection & stockpile calculations. Students in this class will be provided with a hands on Siteworks simulator.

Earthworks 101

Course Description:  

  • This class will be for basic understanding of Trimble’s current software of GPS machine control. The Current Version of Earthworks is 2.21.0. The class will cover the following machine types: Dozer, Excavator, Grader & Compact Machines (Grader/Box Blades). Topics will include; data management, daily startup, working with offsets & a comprehensive dive into the menus.
  • NOTE: This class is also for CAT Grade 3D machines as well.

UTS 101

Course Description:  

  • This class will be for basic understanding of Total Station (UTS) rover use. Class will cover UTS setup, use of UTS rover for stakeout, topo, feature collection, and data transfer.  The class will also cover machine installation & connection, calibration & re-sectioning, use, and data loading. Students will be provided with a hands-on simulator. Students will also be using a real SPS930 Total Station.

GPS 301: Office to Field Advanced

Length: 2.5 days, 8 am - 4 pm  (days 1 & 2) & 8 am - 12 pm (day 3)

  • Day 1 & 2
    • Site Setup/Control
      • Understanding site setup requirements.
      • Site Calibration.
      • Coordinate System vs Site Calibration vs Shift.
      • How does VRS/Cellular fit in the equation?
    • CAD/PDF
      • CAD data in general (What did I get and will it work).
      • Why do I need a PDF or what if I only get a PDF?
      • Does is look right to my control and can it go directly to the field?
    • Data Preparation
      • Let's build a surface and create some data.
      • Build a surface for machine, for quantities, for field layout?
      • What can I stake from my surface/linework?
      • Can I use a line or will I need a point for layout?
      • What about offsets?
    • Go to the field / Deliverables
      • What do I need to export?
      • What if I have a mixed fleet or need to work with other brands?
      • Will my data work for all types of 3D applications (Curb/asphalt/concrete)?
    • Field
      • Workorders can save you time (Sitemaps/Design maps)

  • Day 1
    •  Basic overview (Menu, Tabs, Program Options, General Controls), Data Import (DWG/DGN/XML/CSV, Work Orders, Object Types), TBC Objects (Points, Polylines, Linestring, Surfaces), Beginning Data Prep (Surface creation, Breaklines)
  • Day 2:
    • Data Modeling (Surface Creation, Breaklines, Basic modeling procedures), Data Prep Tab (Tools specifically for modeling efficiently), Site Modeling (Building a Surface, Export)
  • Day 3:
    • Import PDF (Place PDF Non-Vector/Vector), CAD Tools (Manipulate Vector/Non-Vector data, Data Prep (Prepare data for Site Takeoff), Site Takeoff (MSI Manager, Categorize Layers, Identify Site Regions), Takeoff Reports (Subgrade management, Topsoil, Respread, Cut-Fill)
